2022 has been a very difficult year for transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people, especially those who are Black. With waves of misinformation, violence, and legislation attempt to threaten trans and queer lives, these artists refuse to be silenced.
Honey Dijon is a transgender woman specializing in electronic and dance music. In producing music that requires the movement of one’s body and taking up space, Dijon upholds the need for trans people to reclaim their pride and live freely in their bodies. Lotic is a transfemme, nonbinary artist who uses they/them and she/her pronouns. In an interview with Fact, they said, “‘When I’m in boy clothes, I notice the way people look at me is more racial, whereas if I’m standing in my full self, then it’s a little more the gendered side of it… If it’s a look, that’s one thing; they can accept that [as fashion]… If it’s who you are, then that’s like, ‘Oh whoa. What, are you trans now?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, maybe! What’s wrong with that?’'” (Freedman). Their quote encompasses the complexities of being Black and transgender in a society that continues to be unprepared for the creative power of both.
